Sweet Summertime

We got to spend some time in Atlanta the week of July 4. Jeff preached at the church I grew up in! What an honor and exciting thing that was! Perimeter Church has two services and Jeff did both of them...preaching to over 3000 people! He did such a good job!

We had lots of family at church with us that day!

Then we got to spend a day on the lake with my family!  The kids and adults all had a blast!

We came home to celebrate the 4th of July at home!  Jeff's parents came down and we had lunch together then headed downtown to a free family event on the river.  It was crowded but the kids enjoyed a few things.  Then we went into the amphitheater for the symphony and firework show!  It was SO good!  Thankful to be an American!  Thankful for these cute kiddos (just not much better than kids in red white and blue).

Real life pic...then the good pic!

We are enjoying our summer!  Thankful for family and friends who are making it great!

Summer Fun with the Slip n Slide!

3 weeks into summer and it's getting HOT! We are staying cool with trips to the pool and every once in awhile getting the slip n slide out. The kids love it! Well, Anna Mitchell is still not so sure about it. I'm sure she will grow to love it:).

Summer Survival

It's officially summer in our house!!! The last day of school was Friday and it was bittersweet.  I can't believe what a great year everyone had.  Abigail finished her last day of preschool and is so excited to head to the big elementary school with her older siblings.  This mama is not really ready.  She is my shy and quiet and sweet little baby and I just cannot believe it is time for her to get her wings and fly off to the big world of public school.  I know she will do great though!  I, however, may need an extra dose of prayers and maybe some Xanex come August:).

first day of preschool/last day of preschool.  she changed so much!

these are just a few of the kids on our street enjoying homemade donuts on the last day of school made by one of their sweet moms!

So, we now have a glorious 9 weeks ahead of us of no school and heat!  I love summer, I do.  But did I mention the heat? And it can just be overwhelming to have my 4 crazy kiddos at home with me at all times.  I love them so much but they can get so crazy and so loud.  They can also get cranky and bored.  Which makes me cranky and not a very nice or composed mama.  Most summers, we are actually gone to a different location for our ministry assignment (we work with Cru-a college ministry).  Sometimes its Miami.  Other summers its been Colorado.  We love getting to go on these mission projects with students!  It also gives me and the kids really good fellowship and fun things to do!  This summer Jeff has already completed his summer ministry assignment by helping lead Greek Summit in Destin, Fl.  He and lots of other staff led 100 sorority and fraternity students in 3 weeks of intense training and leadership development.  5 students placed their faith in Christ!  This project took place in May while we were finishing up school so we didn't get to participate:(.  So now we will be home the rest of the summer while Jeff works on some seminary classes.  I'm so glad we get to be home, but it can certainly be overwhelming finding things to do with the kids! One thing I really dislike about our town is that there are no good public pools.  And hardly any neighborhoods have them either:(.  It's really surprising for a place that gets SO HOT during the summer.  There are two country club pools (of which we will never belong since we can't afford the dues) and the University of Alabama rec pool.  The rec pool is really great (and somewhat affordable) so we are going to try and go there this summer several times and maybe we can mooch off and be guests of our country club friends pools some too:).  Anyway, I've seen this idea on Pinterest but I wanted to make my own version to see if it will help our summer be a little more structured but fun!

I've hung ours on the chalkboard wall in the kitchen!

I have made a little weekly schedule for us to follow that incorporates something different each day but also adds in a little school work.  With a rising kindergartner, 2nd and 5th grader...we will need to work on a few things this summer so we don't forget everything we have learned.  So each day we will do a little school work too (mostly math and writing/spelling/language).  And one day is for them to help me clean the house:).  Each week, we will work on a memory verse.  I know it's not going to be all pretty and perfect...because well, my children nor I am perfect.  It will be messy and I am trying to have low expectations of how all this will go especially with a wild, loud and active 2 year old running around too:).  I am really hoping and praying though that this little schedule will give us some intentional time together, in the Word, and doing some school work.

So here are our categories:
Make it Monday (we will make crafts, food, etc)
Take a Trip Tuesday (going to try to do free things)
Wet N Wild Wednesday (go to pool, play in sprinkler at home, etc)
Time to Read Thursday (library day)
Fun Friday (I'm going to collaborate with kids on what they want to do...make a fort, watch a movie, etc).

Here is our schedule for this week and our memory verse.  This verse was part of our sermon today at Church and I though it very appropriate as my children have already been quarreling a lot over the weekend...

I wanted to share the files here too in case anyone wanted to use them!  One is with the weekly activities listed.  One is blank with a memory verse slot and one is just blank.  On the blank ones, you can list your specific activities to do each week.  So, I plan on filling mine out each Sunday night so that I can go into the week with somewhat of a plan! You should be able to just right click on these images and save them to your computer to print!

Happy SUMMER!!!
May we all thrive and survive the fun and the heat and all that God gives us during this break with our children!

God's Story

God writes the best stories.  That these 4 (and one in heaven) would be mine is overwhelming. One I chose.  One came from modern medicine.  One came for a short time but left an incredible mark on my heart.  One came after months of trying. One came as a complete surprise.  They all came by God's providence and by His hand in His time. I am humbled and honored to be their mom.

This precious note just about made me cry.  Samuel can't spell worth a lick but he is so tender hearted and I'm so thankful for this letter and the window into his heart.  He knows his story of adoption and I know deep down he has lots of emotions and wounds that he will work through the rest of his life.  I'm so thankful that God called us to him and that I get to be a part of his healing and giving him the feelings of safety and knowing he is adored. That is every child's birthright.  He in turn has given me great joy in making me a mama first!  He wrote this in his note:

Ten Reasons I love You...
1. You feed me
2. You make me laugh
3. You make my life non-miserable
4. You adore me
5. You make me feel like I'm a part of something special
6. You make me feel safe
7. You care about me
8. You make me feel special
9. You help me on stuff I can't do
10. You make me feel like I'm at home all the time

EK's reasons she loves me: "You play with me. You are nice.  You cook good food.  I love when you put me to bed."

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we could ask or imagine."  Ephesians 3:20

Mother's Day always brings out intense emotions in me.  Everyday I am thankful to have these 4 babes entrusted to me.  Mother's Day is a day that I am supposed to be honored and pampered. Except that I also intensely remember the days of pain and agony when I was waiting to be called mom.  I can't ever forget.  So on this holiday I just can't forget those that are suffering and in pain...whether it's from infertility, loss or broken dreams and unanswered prayers.  I also can't help but think of a birth mama somewhere in Ukraine that we will never know but who gave us an unimaginable gift in Samuel.

When I have emotions like these and I know of stories all around me of brokenness and difficult situations I just have to cling to a truth I hold dear. God writes the best stories.  He paints the most beautiful tapestries weaving together the colors and threads into a picture that is good and gives Him glory.  Sometimes we only see one color or one thread and we don't know how it's going to come out beautiful.  But it does.  And it will.  And sometimes it won't be finished until heaven.  I'm so thankful that the Lord has used the broken parts of my story to bring beauty.  It's not always easy and I don't always understand His ways, but I trust Him.  And I love Him.  And I thank Him for answering my prayers and giving me children.  It is my highest honor.
