More good times involve family. This weekend, we have been able to enjoy some rare time with my brother and his wife (Ryan and Erin). They made us homemade ice cream last night and the kids thought it was so cool!
The Worst of Times are shown in the following pictures...
See a difference from my usual crisp and digital SLR awesomeness?
I have sad, sad, sad news...nearly devastating actually. You know the really nice, really expensive camera I JUST bought in March? The flash is already messed up! Sometime during the ice cream making adventure, it just stopped working. So, now the only really good pics I will get is on manual mode (which I am learning how to shoot in) or outside. I am actually pretty mad about this. I am having to really pray that God would calm my anger and the frustration that is boiling up inside of me when I think about it. I know it is just not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it just seems like this type of thing always happens to me. It is under warranty and I can send it off to be repaired but who knows how much that will cost and it can take up to 6 weeks to get it back! Have I mentioned yet that we leave for Colorado in about 3 1/2 weeks and will be gone until the end of July?!!!
I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm praying that God will just miraculously make it work again and if not, then this is just another good reminder for me not to idolize my material possessions. But, if you really want to know the truth...I just want to scream and cry like a baby about it.
To end on a good note...here is a great pic of my family today (shot outside so no need for the broken flash). I love them and am so thankful for a great weekend with them!

I'm no expert, by any means....
But, maybe to help with your not having a flash...
If you don't have enough light inside you can increase your ISO. You run the risk of 'noise' (grain)... but it's often even better than using a flash (doesn't wash out). And, making sure your white balance (WB)is working out well with your lighting.
You might know all about these settings... and maybe even more! I'm just making myself learn without a flash in the creative modes. Just trying to help (hopefully). At least until you get it fixed!
Take care!
I guess to clarify (again, you may know more about this than I do)...
too low ISO = blurry and maybe dark
too high ISO = grainy
IMO... grainy is better than blurry or washed out. Esp. when you only see the noise when cropped in close.
Hopefully, the ISO adjustment will make things 'just right'. :O)
I just found your blog a few weeks ago! Very fun to check on your precious family.
So sorry to hear about your camera. Is there anyway that you can bring it back? Being only two months old, it seems like the store could do something for you.
Good Luck!

GReat picture - you look just like BOTH your parents!!!! SO sorry about your camera - i would be lying on the floor crying like a baby too!!!! HOpefully it will work or you will have lots of outside pics in Colorado -
Really great photograph of your family – E.K. is still! ☺
I feel your camera pain, especially since your pics with your new camera have been SO good. I like a flash for even some outdoor photos, so I am hoping for a speedy remedy or “healing.” My flash works, but it doesn’t pop up anymore – it doesn’t even stand up by itself, so when I take flash pictures I have to hold it up with my finger. It looks pretty stupid, but I suppose it beats duct tape.
Have a fun week and tell EVERYBODY I said, “HI!” ☼
so sorry about the camera. I love the pics of the frog and your family. I can't believe you got such a good picture of EVERYONE!
What a beautiful family picture!!
I'm so sorry about your flash!! I could imagine how frustrating that would be!! I'm praying that a solution finds it's way to you!!
XOXO
that is an AMAZING family pic!! wow...i know your parents are loving EVERY minute of those kiddos :) erin & ryan look great too!
Rach - Does your camera have a hot shoe in addition to (probably on top of) your pop up flash? You could buy yourself a seperate flash to get you through your vacay, THEN send off for repairs at a more convenient time. The way you're going with your photography, it's only a matter of time before you want one anyway..... :)
Hi! I read your blog from time to time. Just wanted to chime in and say, I second the advice on an external flash. I shoot with a Nikon SB-400 attached to my Nikon D40. In fact, now that I have it, I never use my built-in flash. You can point the flash up toward the ceiling for a bounce effect. Makes for beautiful indoor pictures. I have found that this site has great advice: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb400.htm
